Ohio doesn't have a monopoly on good hiking trails. Okay, we'll admit it - there are taller mountains in West Virginia and Virginia than in Ohio. So does Pennsylvania. Thus it's nice to occasionally venture to our neighboring states for a nice, challenging hike with a rewarding view.

If you like the outdoors, Pennsylvania has some great areas. We're particularly fond of the Pennsylvania Wilds in north-central PA, and looking forward to spending more time in the Poconos.

Wild, Wonderful West Virginia. If you like the outdoors, West Virginia might have the most accurate state slogan. Or is it officially Almost Heaven now? Either way, you can find some wild, wonderful hiking destinations.

Maryland has some great hiking, especially Western Maryland. It might be narrow in the mountainous part of the state, but Garrett and Allegheny counties in particular have some worthwhile destinations.

New York has some great hiking as well.

Many of the highest peaks of the Appalachians are in North Carolina, and the higher elevation mountain towns are refreshingly cool in the summer.

Virginia is a great hiking state as well. Shenandoah National Park is the best-known, but far from the only, destination.
