Biking Trails Outside of Ohio

Ohio has a very nice bike trail network; it's one of the areas where we're in the top 10% of states. But we don't have all the nice trails in the country. Pennsylvania is also a top 10% state, Virginia and West Virginia have some very nice trails, Indiana already has some nice trails and is doing an outstanding job building new ones, and I've heard that state up north has some decent ones, too. So, every so often we venture outside of our state borders to check out one or more of these trails.

Ohio's Neighbors

Indiana

The Hoosier State is currently in the process of spending $150 million to build new trails, and already had some good trails.

Coming soon: Cardinal Greenway (Muncie).

Kentucky

We haven't been to any Kentucky trails yet! There don't appear to be as many trails in Kentucky as in Ohio's other neighbors, although we do want to check out the Dawkins Line Rail-Trail in eastern Kentucky.

Michigan

Michigan's trail network is fairly extensive, and based on our limited experience in the state, it may well be in better condition than their road network. Unfortunately we haven't ridden there since 2019, so we don't have any article planned (yet).

Ontario

Ontario shares a border with Ohio, it's just a water border instead of a land border. We hope to make it up to the Windsor area before long as there appear to be some nice trails near the northern shore of Lake Erie.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is a considerably larger state than Ohio, and has trails in every part of the state just like Ohio.

Coming soon: Pine Creek Trail-Trail, Lehigh Gorge Trail, Great Allegheny Passage (east from Rockwood).

West Virginia

If you thought West Virginia was too mountainous for nice trails, you'd be mistaken! West Virginia has two state park maintained rail trails, one of which is in fantastic condition and the other of which is being actively renovated, as well as quite a few smaller, local trails.

Coming soon: Greenbrier River Trail, Rend Trail (aka Thurmond-Minden Trail), Southside Trail

Farther Afield

Maryland

Maryland's best known trail is the C&O Canal Towpath, but it isn't the only one.

Coming soon: C&O Canal Towpath (state line to Pawpaw).

North Carolina

North Carolina's trail network isn't as extensive as Ohio's, but the Raleigh area in particular has some nice trails and a good network.

Coming soon: American Tobacco Trail, Neuse River Trail, Umstead State Park, Reedy Creek Greenway.

Virginia

While Virginia's trails aren't necessarily as connected to each other as Ohio's, there are some real gems, especially in the western part of the state.

Under construction! We'll have some trails before long!
